Deciding when to go to Alaska proved to be the most difficult part. Ideally, I'd want to go in summer when days are long and the most things are open but that is by far the most expensive time to go. The cost of a rental car alone exceeds for two days exceeds the cost of the plane ticket I bought. The other extreme would be to go in winter or late fall, but the later I try to go, the less things are open. I eventually decided on September 15-17. The plan is to fly to Alaska late on the 14th, arrriving in the early morning on the 15th.
Once I arrive, I will go to a hotel and sleep for a few hours before driving down two hours to Seward, entrance to Kenai Fjords National Park. While in Seward I would take 6 or 8 hour cruise into the National Park and then drive back up to Anchorage afterwards. I intend to go back to Alaska many times in the future, but for this trip, just a few days are planned so I can reach my 50 state goal.
From Anchorage I'll fly to Seattle and spend about 12 hours in Seattle before flying home. That will allow me to knock Washington off the list for the year.
Having completed Alaska and Washington, I'll have been to 49 states for the year, and 49 states overall.
Here are the dates for all the remaining planned trips so if anyone wishes to join me on any legs they are more than welcome.
July 8-10: North Carolina and South Carolina
July 14-17: Florida
August 17-29: Road Trip: Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minneosta, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia
September 14-18: Alaska, Washington
October 13-16: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont (will include Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine).
December 1-12: Hawaii
